Day 14: Streaming

Cathy and I try to keep busy. We try not to just watch TV all day. But then people keep talking about "Tiger King" and "Picard" and it's hard not to indulge. This is another sign of the times. TV has gotten strange. If I had to describe 21st century TV to someone living in the 20th century it might go like this:

"So imagine there are hundreds of channels, but you have to pay for each one. But that's okay because each channel has hundreds of shows and you can watch whatever episodes of the show you want at anytime. And you can pause and rewind and fast forward. And there are so many channels and shows, to figure out what to watch you have to do a lot of research to find out what's good and what meets your interests. But when you do find something you like you can just watch it all day. You can watch just that one show for days or weeks or months and when it's over there is an emptiness in your heart, but it's okay because you move onto the next thing... or you could just go back and watch it all over again"

That's TV now.

Cathy and I pay for only one streaming service, Disney+... but we currently have access to a CBS All Access month trial and someone else's Netflix account. Streaming is one business that is booming during this epidemic. In lieu of cinemas or broadway that's what we've got. And we are very fortunate, because streaming is seemingly endless entertainment. If you get bored with anything you are watching it's your own fault, because there is so much else out there!

More and more, movies are skipping cinemas all together and going straight to streaming. Movies that release in cinemas are hitting streaming more quickly and some movies that had a limited cinema run because of the COVID-19 outbreak are also hitting streaming shortly. So... exciting times right?

Yes, I am aware that I just described Streaming TV to an audience who is very familiar with Streaming TV. But that's my insight for today...
