Day 15: Constitution Check

Gary Gygax spent his childhood and most of his adult life in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin where he invented many games. At the age of 10, he and his friends invented LARPing and then in 1973 he changed the course of history forever when he invented Dungeons & Dragons.

Now D&D is played by millions of players around the world and online video conferencing allows people to play even during the COVID-19 outbreak. Cathy was not impressed with how long and boring my campaign was. She has a point. The game is more fun in person.

Later Cathy and I played the "Settlers of Catan: Dice Game" which is an odd mix between Settlers of Catan and Yahtzee.

It occurs to me that board games and dice games have been entertaining humans for millennia. Even in the world of computers and televisions and iPhones these tabletop games persist. Dice are older than books. As I throw a 20-die onto my kitchen table and watch it roll, waiting for the result- someone else is casting a 20-die over 2,000 years ago in Ptolemaic Egypt. Both of us (me and the Egyptian) stare down and wait for the result.
