DAY 3: SAFARI

We went on a Safari this morning, a digital one. The object of the safari was to track down Pokémon critters from the game Pokémon Go. Some might think this quest to be pointless or at least fanciful in nature. Yet I can attest that tracking down digital creatures is at least as exciting as tracking down real ones, and less cruel. The specific Pokémon I was after are rare. Using an online system I was able to track down their locations, but had only about 20 minutes to get to them before they disappeared. Cathy drove and was a good sport of it. She even wore a Pokémon hat for a bit (long enough to snap a photo). We raced from one side of the city to another sometimes getting lucky and sometimes not. Some of the creatures escaped me because I simply couldn’t find them or couldn't get to them in time. But I managed to nab a few during our morning Safari.

Roland’s therapist came for a couple hours today. The doctors have told us that we can have therapists over as long as they are not sick and they wash their hands. I wonder how long that can continue. We are beginning to take our social distancing more seriously. I have stopped going to work, Cathy’s Library branch will close its doors to patrons after tonight. I even cancelled Wednesday Night Pub Quiz at Main Street Taps- something that was hard for me to do.
Cathy worked from 4-8 today and Roland and I stayed home. My dinner was Pizza, Beer, and Star Trek: Voyager. A treat to be sure. Roland was a good boy and let me enjoy the evening without fussing too much. Cathy made some green cookies for Saint Patrick’s day tomorrow, but something tells me that they are not going to last until tomorrow.
Our board game today was Ticket To Ride: London, which is a smaller and faster version of the original Ticket To Ride. It took only a few minutes to play and Cathy beat me (curses). Fortunately we have a closet full of board games. I think we are going to need them.
Some very little part of my brain is beginning to understand the long road ahead of us. How I might not go back to work for another five months. How days and days of social distancing is going to attribute to cabin fever and boredom.
When Earnest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance were stranded in Antarctica for two years, Shackleton ordered his men to journal- to track their experiences. This would help the crew to keep their mind’s focused, to process their emotions, to stay sane. He organized soccer games and encouraged singing and instrument playing. If you need some inspiration during these trying times, read up on Shackleton.
Sleep well, America.
