Day 6: Fort

After Cathy left for work this morning Roland and I built a fort in the living room. Actually, I did most of the building and Roland did a lot of unbuilding. When I was a kid I always used sheets and clothespins for my forts, but in the 21st century, I don’t actually own any clothespins. What I did have plenty of was chip clips.

My plans were bold. I wanted the entrance of the fort to be a crawl tunnel attached to a tent. I also wanted a large corridor connected to citadel. Roland did not enjoy the crawl tunnel. I even tried to crawl through it myself to show him how cool it was, but he did not follow me. He also thought it was more fun to tap on the top of the corridor then to sit inside of the corridor. He was not understanding the spirit of the fort. But I kept working.

As I started on the citadel (which would be high enough to include a trampoline), I began to run out of chip clips. I went to the cupboard to see if there were any clips already attached to bags of chips and do you know what I discovered? Chips clips are not just for chips! There were chip clips on the flour and chip clips on the rice. There were chip clips attached to bags of noodles and bags of tortillas and bags of textured vegetable protein. Who knew that chips clips were so versatile? I took them all.

With the citadel complete, I patched up some of the edges so that no route to the outside was possible. Roland kept finding routes to the outside anyway. He just wasn’t getting the whole point of the fort.

Was I more excited about this fort than my child? Maybe. Whatever. Shut up.

When I was finished with the fort I was feeling really warm. I threw open some windows and doors to try and cool the house down. Then I took Roland for a walk and forgot to shut all the windows and doors.

When Cathy got home from work. She was sure that the heat had broken and I had constructed some kind of heat lodge to keep myself warm. This was not true, but it was just as likely as the real story. Eventually, Roland grew tired of the new living room arrangement and we were forced to deconstruct the citadel and the corridor and return the chip clips to their rightful place in the cupboard- our food once again safe from becoming stale.

The one thing that wasn’t moved back into place was the couch. I’ve always wanted the couch to be dead center of the living room and facing the television instead of being shoved up against the side wall. The COVID-19 outbreak is certainly a time to try new things- so the couch faces the TV now. Boom.
