Day 7: Trivia
Trivia has always been a big part of my life. From my childhood I have participated in various contests including the 90FM “World’s Largest Trivia Contest” and the Ben Franklin Jr. High annual overnight school trivia.
My first experience with a Pub Quiz was in China. I had somehow got myself voted onto the steering committee for a community owned expat bar called “The Snakepit”. To become a member of this establishment you had to drink a turpentine-like alcohol out of a jar full of dead snakes. In the Fall of 2011, My friend Kyle Mims invited me to host one of the monthly Trivia contests. It went well and I was hooked after that!
When “The Snakepit” closed down, it was up to me to find a new home for the Pub Quiz. I turned it into a weekly event which alternated between the bars Atmosphere & Aulon/Volfoni. Teams mostly consisted of American & British teachers.
I think Trivia is a great sport because anyone can play it. You don't have to have any athletic ability and if you don't know any answers at least their is plenty of alcohol and socializing. Some of my favorite memories of my four years in China is playing Trivia with people that I grew very fond of.
When I moved back to Wisconsin my brother was running a Pub Quiz out of Kristen’s Riverwalk, so I started hosting there. When Kristen retired we moved into Main Street Taps where we have a healthy Wednesday crowd. Of course COVID-19 has stopped Wednesday night Trivia. Even the big 90FM contest has been postponed. Now, there is a Trivia-sized hole in my heart.
So , today, I decided to throw out some questions on Facebook. Keep things alive. Here are the questions, the answers, and the name of the person who found each answer.
