Day 20: Marking Time
Humanity chronicles the passage of time in many ways. I like to write about my experiences. Often my writing creates a feedback loop in which I purposely create experiences so that I can then write about it.Other people mark time in different ways. Cathy has been using ink and water color. She has been filling a journal with little vignettes, snapshots of our lives. Memories solidified.
Most people don't chronicle every single moment. Most people only collect souvenirs from the big things: weddings, holidays, family vacations.
Pictures filed into albums to be dug up on some future rainy day. Postcards stuck to refrigerators. Figurines placed on shelves. Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial.
We pose in front of the monuments and road side attractions to say, "I was there." Another badge earned in the game of life. Another box ticked off the bucket list.We mark time. The sun rises and falls. The years go by. And sometimes we glance back for just a moment to remember.
During this pandemic people everywhere are recording their experiences on Facebook on Twitter on blogs. We reach out to others during a time where we can't be with others. We hope for a future where this can all be a memory. And then we can look back and remember. And the lucky ones will say "I was there, I survived".

| I bought these for Cathy on Day 1 of the outbreak. Today, I found her old succulents unceremoniously discarded onto the back lawn. These guys get the fancy pots now. |
